Our First Southern Plantation

Yesterday after school was accomplished, we visited our first southern plantation. We drove into Charlotte, NC to the Rosedale Plantation and took about an hour tour. This particular plantation started out being 900 acres and now is only 8 acres. It was built in 1815 and was not a farming-for-profit plantation. It was farmed for personal use only and the owners (of which, there were about 3) all had other professions (merchants, doctors, businessmen). It was a wonderful tour and a lovely home to begin our exposure to plantation life and education about this part of our country's history. This plantation did have about 30 slaves, but no structure/living quarters remained for us to see...only the house was still existent. What a wonderful day this was to see this beautiful home and begin to grasp some of the history of our nation prior, during and after the Civil War. We are really learning so many cool things!! Praise the Lord for this wonderful opportunity!! Love to all of our friends and family...we miss you all bunches!!

Madeline was particularly fond of this piano...it was exquisite!!

Some examples of period clothing.

Master bed room

Kitchen cook stove in the basement of the house where the slaves would have cooked for all workers and those living in the house...about 40 people on most days!!

"Swamp chestnut oak" tree...not quite 200 years old!! It was majestic!!
