Loooonnnngggg Day!!

Sunday, July 15th was a REALLY long day!! We crossed most of the state of South Dakota, saw four major attractions along the way and spent the night in a Walmart parking lot, all during our hottest day on the road yet!! Needless-to-say, we were all quite exhausted, hot and cranking (even our truck!!) by the time we arrived in Sioux Falls, SD. At times like these...chocolate is in order!! So at 10:00pm, we walked to Sonic and had chocolate malts and the world was made right again!! We did see some really neat things yesterday, which helped to break up our long day in the truck...first stop was Wall Drug in Wall, South Dakota. What vision, ingenuity and marketing a pharmacist had to save his little business and the town itself! It was a tourist trap for sure, but we actually enjoyed ourselves!! Next stop was Wounded Knee Museum...this was a small museum, but it had great impact!! Our children left there feeling the weight of the injustices that were done to the Native American people!! I think my tender, sensitive son took it the hardest :-((. Next we headed to the South Dakota Badlands in the heat of the day...not our smartest decision! The temperature topped 105 degrees as we were heading out of the Natioal Park and our poor truck (whom we have named Savanah...the place that our "pride" moves through) was feeling the heat! We had to drive through most of the Badlands without our air conditioner so that the Savanah's transmission wouldn't overheat as we climbed the hills...we did get dangerously close to overheating the truck, but the Lord was so gracious and got us through safely!! It was really pretty through the Badlands, but we recommend it NOT in the middle of the day, in the middle of the summer! Last tourist stop was the Corn Palace of Mitchell, SD. This was really cool!! This town has taken a theater/stadium and totally covered it with corn...in all sorts of beautiful pictures and designs. Each year in September, they hold a Corn Festival where they "take off the old and put on the new". Each year has a different theme and this year's was celebrating childhood activity...sports, dance, music, etc. Again, another tourist trap worth seeing! So the moral to this lllloooonnnnggggg story is...South Dakota is a wonderfully beautiful state with soooooo much to see :-)). As if we didn't get enough yesterday...we are crossing the entire state of Minnesota today and landing in western Wisconsin. Pray for safety, cooler weather and extra grace toward each other. Hugs and kisses to all, Lioness
